I saw one chick take a drink of water when I set it next to the shoe box, where mama is sitting. First thing: i seperated mom and rest of eggs and chicks because of our chickens, they were being a little too mean, one was beating a chick against the ground and tossing it..

She is now in a large cage, with waterer and bowl of starter food. She is an australorp, pretty big, with two itty bitty banty chicks. One egg is trembling, and peeping, so she should have another today, but she has been with chicks and sitting for two-three days now.

Should I seperate eggs from her? They hatched early, and I dont have an incubator, but other eggs should hatch in week.

this isnt good.. One week is a REALLY LONG time.. If they dont hatch within 2 days I am guessing that she will abandon the nest.. It is VERY bad to have eggs in theire spaced apart... One day is bad enough....

I know, It came as quite a shock. I guess I had some older eggs in her nest, left em by mistake. I have another broody hen at work, she started four days back, should I put rest of eggs under her?

I cant candle (no flashlight etc) so I'm not sure, but she has lots under her, the new broody, but Ill try waiting a few days, and see what happens. If nothing hatches, ill switch em.

Will she teach chicks how to eat? Or what? I've only seen one peck/drink.

Another one hatched! This one is non-banty :) It's a gold fluffy thing, with a tinge of grey on back. ^^

I would just leave her alone. When the eggs are done in a few days she'll leave the nest, toss the remainder in the com poster, do not attempt to hatch o r anything. I let mother nature prevail when it comes to a broody and her eggs, chances are other hens laid eggs with her long after the start of her brood, their chances are slim, and one rotten egg in a nest is I chance I won't take. Remember it's spring and there will be more eggs, more chicks, oh, and there is a thread I started to show off pics of your newborn, love to see the gold fluffy thing!

:D Thanks.

Yeah, one I found dead in its shell, the mom must have cracked it open or something, it looked really frail so it probably died in development. Yeah, I currently have 3 fluffy little cuties. One looks like a baby OEB, the one is dark brown on head and black and grey on rest of body, the last if the fluffy golden glory, with little grey parts on its wings. I have a mixed breed flock, so what comes out of the eggs is more fun cause it's like a surprise :D :D

Tomorrow is the due date for rest of eggs, I will wait a day after that day, then attempt to 'peek' at eggs that are left.

Oh guess what! I have another hen sitting :D a banty
