This is one of my 4 week old chicks. Out of 9 this chick and one other one developed a bare patch of skin at the wing joint. Initially I wasn't concerned because they're all at the raggedy looking stage. A few days after I noticed the bare spots scabbed over, but the chicks seemed fine; the spots weren't tender to the touch and I didn't see and swelling so I let it be.

Today both of the wing joints are swollen on one of the two chicks and I'm not sure how, or if i should treat it.

If I treat or lance the abscess I'll have to bring the chicks inside (I'd bring in both even though the other seems fine atm) so I can keep the area clean while it heals.

I'm not opposed to bringing them inside for treatment, but we're at the later stages of integration and I'd likely have to start all over with these two by themselves, depending on how long it takes to heal. I only took pictures of the one that looks worse.

Sidenote: Oh, for the love of chickens . . . why are my portrait pictures posting in landscape mode?

Edited: grammar

Yeah, my pictures aren't posting properly either. It's turning them all sideways so my chickens look like they're doing some weird anti-gravity stuff.

So odd about these 2 babies. I wish I could be of more help. I'm guessing you would know if they were rubbing up against something (like a brooder pate or something) repeatedly that would irritate those joints. I know you're with your birds a lot, so you'd probably have noticed that.

Bald patches on a litter of stray kittens I had once ended up being ringworm. I'm not sure if birds can get that.

It doesn't look like a rash though. If it were something like that I'd expect to see it on all the chicks, I think . . unless these two have weaker immune systems than the rest .:idunno

This is the first time I'm using shaving in the run, but again it seems like all the chicks would have issues if it were something in the shavings.

Is there a chance they are rubbing on something? I would be very surprised if it is the shavings.
The only thing I can think of was other chicks 'perching' on them, but they have chicks perches in the pen. I haven't seen this before from chick piles, but I'm still fairly new, so there's a lot of things I haven't seen yet that are common.

I would think so too. And I would expect to see the irritation more all over, like where their bellies are in more constant contact with the shavings.

And yeah when the kittens had ringworm, every one of them had it.
