2 days and counting and how to get rid of skunks

LOL!!!! I love it! Now if I could just convince them to move over the my neighbors house. But I think they'd notice me trying to relocate skunks to their yard.

We had skunk issues several years back.

The end play was a skunk trap we found plans for at the extension.

Garbage can, half filled with water. Tape newspaper over top.

Place dish full of desirable food and water in center of newspaper. Tuna or Cat food (we actually had best luck with crab shells).

Make ramp to top of can / platform.

Skunk climbs up, grabs food, gets water on newspaper, newspaper gets wet, skunk falls through wet newspaper into water below, swims until tired then drowns.

NO SMELL - Dead Skunk

I would be concerned with other animals, like the barn cat mentioned.

The tactic of moving it down the road to the neighbors is funny, however I would still think it might come back.

Your odds are 50/50. A head shot, properly placed, (ie brain) will often prevent the spraying. There may be a bit of a leak, but not an outright spray. A poorly placed head shot, or body hit, will result in a spray. Is your DH a good shot, and willing to get up fairly close? As Clint Eastwood said, "Do you feel lucky?"

The drowning method, as harsh as it is, is actually one of the best ways to prevent the smell.

As to the rat question, yes, Jack Russell, or Fox Terrier dogs, are fantastic rat deterrents. When we had a horse, rats moved in to the barn fairly quickly, as the feed was present. Our Fox Terrier soon had them eliminated. Best rat trap ever..
