We have a small flock of hens ,no rooster. Within the last two weeks we have lost two hens without any reason. We found one by the water trough a week and half ago,it was fine 30 minutes earlier. No wound or blood and was still limp when we noticed. The other just tonight when we went to close coop, all the others where on ground or on perchs and we found her in the corner with a broken egg under her. we assume she had been dead for no mre than a couple hours. I'm concerned because west nile and equine virus has just been reported this week in the area and we are a mosqito test sit for the state. We have put all egg consumption on hold to be safe till i can talk to the state worker who comes for the testing. Our flock is only 3-4 yaers old and live a pretty good life. They roam the yard not straying far from the coop and house and our cats actually watch out for them. They basically will lay next to each other in the front yard..has anyone experiance sudden death like this with their flocks?
