2 hens same age only 1 laying

i have 2 leghorns just turned 6 mo. we're getting 1 egg a day but not sure which is laying. I did have only 1 nest box and added a 2nd this weekend and changed bedding from hay to to pine shavings.... am keeping golf balls in 1 box for a while. feeding them both layer crumbles since i thought they would both start laying soon - should i switch back to chick starter till other starts to lay?

If they are above 16 weeks or so I wouldn't bother switching back. A week or two of layer feed is not going to harm the non-layer. I'm sure she'll start soon enough.

Just like you, I had two pullets that turned 6-months old and pullet eggs began to appear, but I wasn't sure from which pullet---until the day I got two pullet eggs on the same day.


Expect that soon you will get two pullet eggs and you will be verified that they are both laying.

I got several hens all the same age and as of right now only one is laying. I am getting one egg a day from her. I was watching her this morning while she was going through her laying ritual and she is absolutely mean when that's going on. A couple of other hens got up in the coop with her and she chased them out. In fact she pecked and pulled one of the other hens feathers out in the process of chasing her out of the coop. Then got back in the nesting box and continued with the process of laying her egg. I am wondering if she's going to continue to be mean once the others start laying and not let them get to any of the other nesting boxes to lay their eggs? I really hope not. I wonder if by her being mean like that if thats why the others haven't started laying yet? I mean if they can't get up and in a nesting box, but then I would think I would find an egg on the ground somewhere. Oh well, chickens will be chickens right?

Mine are all 19 weeks. I have one laying pretty much an egg a day now and the other two aren't laying yet. However, both of the other two are pinking up so that's good. I figure the Jersey Giant is going to be last to lay. The one laying regularly is the Barred Rock.
