Really hoping that someone can offer some ideas. This is our first try at chicks and so we're lost on what to do for our little guy.
Little EE roo is 8 weeks old, and started limping yesterday (may have been day before, we had company this weekend and didn't pay as much attention to the chicks as usual.) When I hold him in my hands, I can feel that he isn't putting any weight on this foot. When hobbling around the brooder, he will put weight on it if he absolutely has to, but would rather hop on the one good foot.
His leg has no breaks or injury that could be seen or felt, and no other obvious problems.
We suspect that the Cochen chick, who is larger (and now suspected to be a roo also), may have been picking on the EE, pecking his foot maybe.
All the chicks (5 total) are on medicated starter crumbles and ACV in their water. They've had some treats, vegies, strawberries, bananas, eggs.
They are on pine bedding with DE (we call it mini-deep litter) in a large cardboard box from a washing machine, with a few bricks and a small log/branch to hop/roost on. All droppings seem normal, although now that I think of it, he did "potty" on me yesterday when I was holding him -- it was all clear liquid, just like urine -- do chickens do that?
None of the other 4 chicks are having any trouble, and the EE is the smallest.
We pulled him out of the group last evening and put him in a cat carrier with food and water, on pine bedding with a wash cloth in the corner to cuddle up with, and kept him in a seperate room upstairs.
So, are we going in the right direction? Do I need to add something else to our efforts? We'd prefer not to take him to the vet if we can avoid it.
