We have a buff orp. Since we have had her she has gone broody 3 times. The first 2 times she used the nesting box. This time she is up in the hay loft hidden. We actually thought a chicken hawk had caried her off. Why the sudden change in plans? Whats wrong with the box?

Also, I have some maran eggs in the bator. I was considering putting some under her. Would she take to them? She went "missing" last Monday and I put the eggs in the bator Tuesday night. Would the eggs survive?

Well if you put the eggs in your incubator the day after she went missing, I'm betting that they would. BUT, I would check on her to make sure of the hatch date on the eggs she is currently sitting. If her eggs hatch out and she decided it's time to take the chicks to food and water etc, she might leave the nest and those marans eggs uncovered and unattended - not good. You would want to keep an eye out so that if this happened you could pop them into your bator to finish up and hatch. My bet is that she will take them - broodys will accept ANY eggs I think. Good luck!

You might want to ask in the Incubating and Hatching section, although I would agree with above post.

Yup, broodies don't even care if they are chicken eggs, much less their own eggs. The dates is what might present a problem.
