hey all!!! i am new to the chicken thing and sure this wont be the only question i need help with... i was sent 2 roosters with my order (i did not order them but was sent replacements) i am wondering if it would be wise to keep both of them in the same coop with the other (11) Hens without them going after each other all the time??? they are 4 weeks old right now and are showing no signs of aggression towards each other... i have 13 chicks total and of the 13 there are 7 different breeds... should i get rid of one of the roosters ??? or should i try them together for a while???

A lot of people keep more than one rooster in a coop. It depends on a number of factors such as the size of the coop, the number of hens per rooster, to breed of the roosters, and even their personalities. You should probably be okay. One will establish dominance over the other and become the alpha roo. Just keep an eye on them as things progress.

Some breeds are much more aggressive than others, but a lot of times it just depends on the character of the individual bird.

thanks... i think i have plenty of room... the hen house id 8x8 and the run area is 8x18... i have 11 hens to the 2 roosters (or roos as i have learned)... i think i might give it a shot for a while and hope for the best... i would think they would be alright since they have been together since a day after hatching

This is exactly my ratio. Thanks for asking the question

I have a 4 x 8 coop, and a fairly large run, and I have 12 chooks, 5 of them are roosters. I don't plan to keep more than two, as I am definitely seeing their maturation process kicking in. At 12-14 weeks, they are posturing with each other, fluffing up their feathers and I'm noticing the occasional "I mean business" kind of pecks. No injuries, and I am finding it fascinating to watch it all unfold. A couple of the roos have started some very clumsy and awkward mating attempts with the pullets.

I am seeing different temperaments, and will be observing them to determine which roo seems suitable to keep. I may keep a second as I mentioned; he has bad leg from when he was a few days old (I tried unsuccessfully to Bandaid the legs together to help realign it, to no avail

) and so I am choosing to offer him a life with our flock. He is low on the pecking order, but doesn't get hassled, and gets around really quite well. He seems 'happy'.

Good luck, and hope you can decide on whatever will be best for your flock.

The ideal ratio is 1:10-12, though some folks have success with different numbers. You can try to keep 2:11 and it might work. Just have a Plan B in place, just in case.
