Hello,

I tried to research this and did not come across a thread...

I have an pen outside that I put my little ones in for some time each day...do i need to provide them grit at this point? They are about 2 weeks old and the pen is on grass and dirt.

Thanks,
CA

They should pick up enough natural grit when they are outside. It couldn't hurt to make sure they can get some sand or grit besides but it would most likely be more to make you feel better. Good Luck

I cover the bottom of a Cat Litter pan with coarse sand. They pick at it, but also use it as a dust bath to loosen up the itchy downy fethers that are coming out at this point.

Good Luck with them!

I buy chick grit from TSC. All other rock and stone is so much softer, that it wears down fast and that is why granite grit is best choice, works really well for best utilization of feeds. My baby chicks are given free choice and they choose it with pleasure, Chick grit is fine Granite, as soon as they are given anything besides Starter Crumbles. Their tiny gizzards are at optimum function at an early age. I first give my chicks some treats such as rolled oats, lettuce, vegie scraps at 2/3 weeks with a dish of free choice Chick grit.
