My now 2 year old Rhode Island Red has begun to act like a Rooster. Sounds crazy right?! Well, within the past 2 weeks or so i've noticed her beginning to attack me when going in the coop to collect eggs(spuring, pecking, etc.). I just figured she was being a hostile mother over her eggs. Until she began to make strange noises as if she was trying to crow. When I went out to collect eggs today she was standing right next to another one of my RIR's and I noticed that her comb and waddles were significantly bigger than the other hens waddles and comb. I have been googling this issue and found that it could have something to do with a damaged ovary? It made me think back to about a month ago when I found a "rubber" egg in the yard. I don't know for sure if it came from her or one of my other hens, but with her recent sex change I dont know if that would have anything to do with it? Does this all mean that I am down to 2 roosters and 10 hens instead of 1 rooster and 11 hens? D:

Thanks!

Any hen can lay a rubbery, shell-less egg at any time; it's normal and happens at any phase of her life. I don't necessarily think one is related to the other. Yep, the "sex change" thing happens, and with all the chicken sex change stories I've been reading here and other places on the internet, it happens more often that we think!
