I gave my dad 7 of my chicks who are now 20 wks old and have started laying in the last week. Two of the girls have now layed soft shelled eggs. While my parents had the hens out in the yard this evening "Pocahantas" squatted by a tree just feet from them and layed these 2 eggs at once. Both are soft shelled AND connected by membrane type substance like an umbilical cord!!! He has recently switched to laying pellets and is going in the morning to get oyster shells. Is there anything else he can do for soft shells?? Is this normal?? Also, just how unusual to get 2 eggs at the same time, remember, they watched this in person so there is NO doubt that what you see in the pic is from the same girl. You can even see the membrane material attaching them.
