Hi everyone! It has been quite a while since I posted an update about my project with the"Baby Dolls" so I thought I would update the project for those of you that have shown support and interest in the last several years. As many of you know, I lost many of my pullets last spring in a terrible storm. The storm set me back a year on the project. Or so I thought!
As it turns out, the good Lord was sending me a blessing in disguise. My "Baby Dolls" from last year were quite small, most of them weighing 17 to 22 ounces average. Some were larger than that, but still quite small by bantam standards. I would say they were about half the size of the normal bantam cochin.
As it turns out this year, some of my offspring are so small that I can hardly believe that they are real! I wanted to share my good news with my friends here on BYC and show you my little darlings.
I do not have any for sale at this time, as I am in the process of building my flock up and fine tuning type and feather pattern on them. I have now been working on these for 5 years and I also wanted to mention a special thank you to SilkieSuz on here for working with me on this project. If it were not for her having some of these on her farm, I would be much further behind in this project because of the storm last year. Because she had some of the original "Baby Dolls" at her place, some of the best, we have been able to build the project back this spring.
Here are the photos of two of the "Baby Dolls" that hatched last November. They are almost filled out, but will probably gain a few more ounces and should really fill out nicely as far as type and color. Not perfect, but I am happy so far with what they have become!
I hope you enjoy seeing them!

This is a closeup of "Ryan". He weighs about 7 or 8 ounces. He will still fill out with coloring in his feathers and will likely gain a few more ounces. I do not think he will ever weigh more than 12 ounces tops. He has a cute little "crow" and he has the sweetest temperament of any rooster that I have owned. He has some shafting in his lacing which I am working on, but his body type and feathering are wonderful. Keep in mind, that they are not completely feathered out just yet and it will be a few months before they show their full potential.

Here is another photo of him and it will give you a better idea of his real size. He is just coming out of his "teenager" phase and he has some filling out to do in the next few months.
The photo is not very clear, as I took it with my iphone, but you get the idea.
The soup weighs about 10 and 1/2 ounces. Ryan is much lighter than the soup! The soup can is 4 inches tall.

Another photo of Ryan! I love his beautiful brown eyes!
You can see that he has some "shafting" in his lacing here as well, but many of the feathers are solid and nice looking. I love how his comb and wattles look and I like the size of his beak in relation to his body size.

Here is one of my little hens "Alaina". She is the same age as Ryan.
She is looking pretty small. She weighs about 9 ounces. Almost as heavy as the can of soup!

Here is another picture of her. I think her type is coming along very nicely, and she does not have shafting in her feather pattern, but her lacing is not as distinct as I would like it to be. She has the body type that I am looking for and her proportions are nice. The photo below does not really show how round she is, she was a bit camera shy. Still, I am very happy with how she is turning out. She has beautiful round fluffy tail feathers that are just what I am breeding for, also her leg feathers are wonderful. Yes! I did dress her up with a red bow! After all, she is a "Baby Doll" and yes, I am crazy!
Thank you for taking a peek at my project and I hope you like them. I am "very excited" about the size of them, as they are now very close to the weight of a Serama. I did not intend to get them this small, but Hey! I love them!
Thank you God! Thank you Suzanne for your help!

Also, I wanted to add that some of the latest birds were hatched from "Levi" and "Rachel" as well as from SilkieSuz's "BabyDolls". The parents to this generation of birds weigh approximately 1 1/2 lbs. average. "Levi" matured to about 26 ounces and Levi's son, matured to about 18 ounces. I am curious to see if this last generation remains small or if they become even smaller?
This is "Levi" all filled out in full bloom! The second photo is of Levi with some of the hens in the background.

I am sorry to hear that you lost your baby dolls to a spring storm. How horrible that must have been to discover such a thing. Either way it looks like you made a wonderful comeback. You have an adorable batch of chickens! I am blessed to have met you and to have such a wonderful chicken mentor. Thanks for all the hens I have purchased from you and all the helpful advice you have given this chicken newby!

Hi, I'm not so sure I'm a wonder, clfromok! I wonder what I'm doing with all of these chickens!

I'm so glad you like them.

Hey chickennugget! It was really sad to discover them drowned from the storm. I felt heartbroken. I know now that it was just part of God's plan for them and he has blessed me with some real cuties. I am glad we met as well. You are always welcome here and I am happy that you enjoy the birds you got from me. I'm always happy to help any Newbie, whether they are customers or not. Call me anytime!

Hey Jodi.

I sent you a video of some of the baby doll chicks today, but don't know if your phone accepts vid. They are sooo cute and getting their wing feathers and huge feathers and fluff on those tiny feet! My silkie baby is getting bigger than those baby dolls now, but one of the yours is a bit bigger than the other two. Anyway. I just wanted you to know we all are having so much fun watching these babies grow. Thanks for letting my mama hen raise them up! She turned out to be a GREAT mom.
