Sorry for your loss.

So, have you given up on chickens? What are you going to do differently now if you do keep them?

I suffered a mild racoon attack earlier this year. It ate all the eggs that two of my ducks were laying in nests. After that I surrounded my duck house with Premier electric poultry neting and bought a LGD in training (GP puppy). Problem solved, or so I hope.

You just need to make a more secure place for your chickens, and more permanent. Don't give up on them. Work on it.

We have a very secure place for our chickens and haven't had any problems yet. I don't have as many chickens as you did though. And just a note your post won't last, if your hating on any animal. Couldn't you just shoot the coons?

Im so sorry! I have a coon problem too. They are so horrible b/c after they eat, which isnt much of it, they just go thru slaughtering for fun.

Btw, everyone keeps talking about an LGD dog. what kind of dog is that?

What kind of wire was on your tractor?

We have found that the hardware cloth is practically impenatrable (spelling?).
It doent flex like chicken wire and they have a hard time getting a grip on the littler squares.

I know its frustrating, but dont give up. You can outsmart those coons!

I have about five "I hate raccoons" posts on my blog. Evil animals. Luckily no murders yet! Must remember not to rant, bad manners. But......I HATE RACCOONS!!!

Now, I am wondering if I need to join the club. I haven't had any problem yet....but it is summer and food is plentiful for them. What the heck is going to happen when it gets cold? Or is it better in the winter or does it depend in what type of area you live in? I am on 1 acre, fully wooded and no real close neighbors, and as far as I know, no other chickens close, just mine. Let me know what I need to expect?

We had a coon take a couple of our ducks, so we had to make safer housing for the ducks. We have spent many nights waiting for the return of the coon! Oh we have seen it, boy is this coon big! I will have a coon skin rug if we catch it. They are mean and I think they attack not for food but becuase they can. It wont be long before I get my rug these coons are to brave for thier own good!!!!!!

My coon story -

We were fine for an entire year, and gradually adding in new chicks of different breeds.

Well, fine that is, until one morning when I walked out to a damaged coup, chicken wire ripped apart, some fencing literally just torn away, and my ENTIRE FLOCK deceased in bloody piles, with a couple of my babies still hanging lifelessly from the holes in their pen fence, where those monsters had grabbed them by their heads to pull them through but then just chewed off the head and left the body.

We had Rhode Island Red hens (five), seven Leghorn hens, and four adult Silkies (three hens, one roo) on the other side. All murdered, all beheaded, most just ripped up and left for dead, not even eaten. Where is the sense in that?

We will be starting anew in mid August, when our shipment of 25 assorted pullet chicks arrive some time the week of August 18th, but the week before, I'm going out for some hard wire cloth and a freaking nail gun! New boards, everything! By the time I get done re-doing this chicken coup, those swarmy little s.o.b.'s will have better luck getting into Fort Knox!

Anyways... I Hate Raccoons, anyone else?
