23 weeks and no eggs!

My 8 chickens are 21-24 weeks old I still have no eggs. I was wondering when I will get eggs. I thought I would have at least 1 egg but none! What are some signs of egg laying chickens? They are pure bred RIR and Ameraucanas thanks

Since they're right around the six month age line, eggs should be on the way. A simple sign to look for is the brightness of your pullets' combs. Do have any pics?

They will start squatting when you reach down as if to pet their back, or sometimes if you just walk up to them. When they squat, they will lift their wings slightly. Mine also do a little stomp. Mine did that about two weeks before laying. Anither sign is scratching around in the nesting boxes. If you haven't done so already, put some fake eggs in there. I just used plastic easter eggs, and filled them with sand and hot glued them shut. You can also use golf balls. Mine started kicking the bedding around (and out) the nesting box about a week before laying.
One day before laying, my first to lay was really anxious, pacing around and more vocal than usual.
Combs and wattles will be bright red also, although it can still be awhile after that. My first to lay was 17 weeks, but one of my buff orps didn't lay until almost 30 weeks.

Rooster will jumpstart and get them laying, mine always did at 4 months bc of mating jumpstart the hormones in my experiences but since your close to the "single ladies" age of egg laying you will get eggs soon!

Put some fake eggs or golf balls in the nesting boxes to teach them where you want them to lay. If you free range, they may have laid in hidden nests. There is plenty of daylight for eggs before winter starts. Good luck!!!! It’ll feel like Christmas when you look in your nesting boxes and find your first eggs!!!! It’ll be soon! Waiting is the hardest part!

I have 6 pullets 2 are 23.5 weeks one has been laying for almost 4 weeks. The other is just starting to turn red in the comb and wattles. I have one that is 20 weeks and 2 might be 17 weeks. All but the youngest are starting to investigate the nest box when my one pullet is laying. The youngest 14-16 weeks. Three cockerels were exchanged for pullets that is why i'm not 100% sure of the ages. this waiting for that next egg is driving me crazy. I have 2 EE and the others are just barn yard mixes. Hope to get a colored egg.

If you have show lines rather than hatchery, your pullets may take a lot longer to start laying eggs. My SQ Ameraucana pullets started laying at eleven months!
Ask the breeder what you can expect from them.

RIR can take up to 28 weeks depending on size. The larger they are the longer they take. Ameraucanas usually by 24 weeks.
