I should be receiving 25 chicks this Friday. All are brown layers. I bought a bag of 24% Dumor to start them on. I read where another poster said this is for quail, turkey and partridges. The extra protein should help them get off to a good start, or am I wrong?

So, this feed, it was flock raiser or grower? If so, I'd use it, but not right away. Not that it would be horrendous, but I start all my chicks on Chick Starter. Very specific label. Chick Starter with medication. The medicine is not an antibiotic, but rather is preventative. It would be a shame to have one's chicks come down with coccis. Buy a 20 lb bag of Chick Starter crumbles then switch them to what you bought in a few weeks, when the first bag is gone. Once they start, they eat an amazing amount.

24% is high protein and should be quite good for chicks, but knowing that it could tax the tiny kidneys a bit at first, I would wait 1-2 weeks before beginning it. I think it will be safe as long as water is always available (helps flush the system). The more protein they get the better growth they will have when they need it most! I have kept my 9 month old hens on 18-22% protein levels from the start. They look awesome, if I do say so myself!

Is that definitely chicken chick starter?

In France, you would only get such a high protein starter for turkey/pheasant/quail. Chicken chick starter is usually 19-20%

I'd be worried about them gaining too much weight too quickly with that high a protein level.

I have had my eye on this for a while now, and might try it for my next batch of hatchlings. It is chick starter, but they package it to state it is for gamebirds. I just read the reviews for it on TSC and it seems like a fair few people do use it for chicken chicks too.
Anyone have first hand experience?
