For about 5 weeks rats have been eating our chickens, but only our rescue chickens.
We have been working to eradicate the rats and have not lost a chicken in 2 weeks.
Yesterday, a non rescue who has a bad leg had a puncture wound in the back of her neck.
Today the injury appears worse, and she was forgotten outside last night. It is a perfect puncture wound and a featherless area around it.
We cleaned and bandaged her but noticed afterward that she is foaming at the mouth and not eating.
Is it likely this is a failed attempt by a rat to eat her, or a puncture from another hen/rooster? It doesn't seem likely that she would have been able to defend herself from a rat attack as her leg is bad.
But what is causing the foam? Can foam be shock from the night outside and 1st aid?
I read several threads here and in other locations that state rabies is not likely.
We did touch her. We are used to picking her up, because she is not very mobile we assist her daily to eat...so it didn't even cross our minds not to touch her. We were mostly wearing gloves, but took them off briefly while bandaging. She didn't start foaming at the mouth until after we bandaged her, so we only became concerned after the fact.
Is she okay? Are we okay? Would very much appreciate insight.
