Al Capon
Songster
So I've been keeping track for a month just for my own enjoyment. If you haven't done this yet, I suggest you try it, I've had a few eye-openers, such as.
I've got 2 hens that went 29/31 for a batting average of 93.5%, one Delaware and one Barnyard mutt.
Is that kind of laying rare or does everybody have a few "faithful" layers?
The Brown Leghorn I have is the sorriest layer of the bunch, she went 16/31. From reading all the talk before getting chickens, I'm surprised she didn't lay more.
All the true Breeds averaged around a 57 gram egg, while 1 cross went above 57 and 1 cross went under.
7 hens = 161 eggs in 31 days.
I appreciate all the eggs, but is there a way to slow down the 2 faithful layers? I don't want them to be all used up by the end of their 2nd year.
All birds are Ideal Hatchery birds from Texas, so no show-birds.
Any guesses as to what the Barnyard X might be? I know she's out of a RIR rooster because that was the only rooster on the place, but the maternal line could be a RSL, GSL, BSL or maybe even a Buff Orpington. She's trying to go broody on me for the 2nd time this year. The occasional Buff colored neck feathers makes me think Orp.
