Hi, we are new to raising chickens and on 4-3 we got our 6 babies. We got 4 Leghorns, 1 Bantam, & 1 Buttercup. They all got along fine until 2 days ago, when the Bantam & Buttercup starting fighting. We separated them & have had no success in putting them back together. We were hoping we had all hens, but now we aren't sure. We're wondering if the fighting is due to the Bantam being a rooster. If it turns out to be a rooster, we will have to re-home him, since we can't have them in the city limits. I really hope it's not a rooster, because my daughter is so attached to it. They are best friends. I've tried researching online, but I honestly can't tell if it's a rooster or hopefully a hen. Any help with our dilemma would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, this is depressing news. He is the sweetest bird we have. And as I sit here typing this post, he has now started to crow. I guess we know for sure now. My daughter is heart broken. Thank you for all your help.

I guess you got your chickens as baby chicks. Sexing can be difficult with some breeds of chickens. Out of a straight run, you have a 50/50 chance of hens vs. roosters. We got Barred Rocks, 4, and got three hens and one rooster, who, like yours, will have to find a new home. Even though my neighbors said they wouldn't mind, the Chicken Gestapo will probably come by if someone reports a cock a doodle do in the neighborhood. Never mind the five barking dogs 24/7, the cats that use your garden for a lavatory....they get special treatment. Although I've never heard of a chicken terrorizing a neighborhood...maybe Chickzilla?

This was him the day we brought him home. The place we got them from only guaranteed the Leghorns were hens. We were always hoping they were all females. I've lived on this site for the 2mths we've had them, hoping to figure out what we had. Especially after my neighbor rudely informed us that we BETTER NOT have any roosters, because she doesn't want to be awakened every morning by it crowing. I have no prob with the crowing, but to keep peace in the neighborhood & avoid a visit from the city, we are trying to find him a new home.
