My broody is on day 21 today. She has 5 eggs. This morning I check and don't see or hear anything going on so I decide to take 2 eggs that aren't hers and see if they have anything in them. I have tried to hatch other eggs from this hen and they have all been clear so I was excited to see that these 2 eggs have developed. I didn't look too hard for anything other than that. I gave them back to mama. About 3:00 I go and check on her again, and she is not on the eggs.
For 21 days I have had to kick her off to go eat and then today she goes out on her own. Well, one egg had pipped, and is peeping. And to top it off a flock mate decided to give her another egg to hatch, (not gonna happen on day 21) silly birds. So much for lockdown and not opening the 'bator. How do they get away with that?
She has been in a nest box 3' off the ground so I decide to move her (better late than never, I hope). I put her in cage, with her nest box (I use cat liter boxes) and hope for the best. She was on the nest when I came in for the night and her little egg was still peeping. Tomorrow morning I should have new babies.
Or I will have nothing because she is ticked that I moved her, or because she decided to go play today. I almost put the eggs in my incubator, that'll teach her.
