3 chickens or 3 cows??

I am working on my plan to get the laws changed in my area....I couldn't help but laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of the zoning ordinance...

12.0211 "Animal and poultry husbandry or the keeping of farm animals, provided that such uses are located on lots which contain 3 or more acres and comply with other requirements of Subsection 12.06 of this article, and further provided that a maximum of 1 animal per acre, up to 5 animals be permitted......


So, if I had 3 acres (which I don't), theoretically I could have 3 cows OR 3 chickens, as long as they were kept 100 feet from any other lot in the residential district.

I bet if I asked my neighbors, they would gladly chose my birds or cows...what you do think????

A lot of places use livestock units rather than a specific number of animals regardless of breed. Here it is pretty simple with 1 large animal such as a cow or horse the equivalent of two small animals such as a goat or sheep. Chickens are so small that they aren't even counted! What is unclear to me is how a pygmy goat or mini horse would count as they are not specifically labeled.

I have seen code where the weight of the animal determined how it counted.

Boy that's just goofy.

But I guess no more so than horses being allowed around here while chickens are fiercely monitored.

It is pretty crazy actually...

About a mile from my house (but in a different township) a family keeps a horse in the front & side yard of their house, on maybe a 1/4 of an acre at best. Definitely not a lot of room for such a large animal.

In our township, there are no specifications for what you can do if you live on 5+ acres...so you could have 100 cows & there are no rules about it, as long as they are 100 feet from the neighbors. I live on just under an acre & can't legally have 5 chickens...
