I just received a batch of chicks from the hatchery today. There are 36 total.. all came in healthy and are eating and drinking.. no piling with ample space... no loud chirping. My order was for all pullets, 15 brown egg layers and 15 ornamental layers..we received 6 extras.

One of the smallest pullets is obsessive about pecking the eyes of the other chicks. She seems to prefer to peck the largest ones that are solid in color (yellow and buff) She only goes for their eyes and doesn't just peck but also pulls at them. She looks like either a modern game or a phoenix..although I have no idea. None of the other chicks display any aggression at all (not even the 3 others that look like her) and none of the chicks retaliate. I have her in a ten gallon aquarium placed inside the brood pen for now so she can see the others and stay warm (she doesn't cry as long as she can see them but tries to attack them through the glass) If I take her out she runs strait to the other chicks and attacks again. She has already pecked raw spots around several chicks eyes.(this is day 1)

What should I do with her? I've raised chicks before but never had one so aggressive so young.

Chicks often do this the first few days, eyes, feet, you name it. They are just figuring out their little world--all is normal and she will stop in a few days.

should I keep her separate then or no? There are 5 chicks with bloody rims around their eyes..what should I do about that?

Me either..plus she seems obsessed. Right now it's just the eye lids..but I don't want to risk more damage than i'm capable of treating.(she pulls if she can get a grip and it's literally just the eyes) Any tips are greatly appreciated.. the more plan B's( or c-z) I have the better

He's a white Cochin bantam... and all the rooster I could want or need! Right now he tends to a few standard sized RIR females.. he's a lot smaller than them but when they call he comes running. We've spent a year and a half feeling out our new home and the locations ability to support free-range birds and finally decided we were set up and safe to expand. I thought it would be a good idea to step outside my usual breed box of astralorps and RIRs but now i'm not so sure!

After spending three days in the aquarium watching the group through glass i'm happy to report the chick is no longer attacking the others and has been returned to the flock! I wanted to give her a few extra days before posting that she'd stopped...she's been with them four days now and I haven't seen her attack once.
