We think one of our hens laid three eggs yesterday. We aren't 100% sure, but here's the story...she laid an egg in the morning (we know this because we have 6 hens and had 6 eggs). Last night she was lethargic, didn't want to eat anything including scratch, and was extremely puffed up (super bloated looking). We figured she would lay a rubber egg and a few minutes later she did. She looked a little better, but still wasn't quite herself and she still looked a little puffy. We watched her for a bit, then I went to take care of other chores and when we looked about an hour later there was another rubber egg in the pen and the hen looked and acted completely normal again.

They are Lohmann hens, bred for high egg production from what I've read, and they are also relatively new layers (about 7 weeks). We know that rubber eggs are common in new layers etc. They have free choice calcium, food, water etc. We know that the second rubber egg may have come from one of the other hens, but none of them was acting "off". Has anyone else had anything like this happen?

As a side note, today they are still looking good and happy, and we have 5 eggs (not expecting a 6th).

I lost nine hens in a night, leaving only one survivor. A white Leghorn. She laid three the next day. I suppose one or two could have been later that day, but 3 in a 24 hour period. I wondered if maybe it was some kind of survival thing. Like get the eggs out while i still can LOL

Wow, that's amazing! I know they have several eggs in the egg-laying tract, sorry, the oviduct, in varying stages of production at the same time, but I did not know this was possible. Thank you both for sharing!
