I have a three month old Thieving Otter “dark and stormy” Coturnix male quail that was hatched June 15. So when I figured out who were the boys from the hatch, I separated them out and created groups. While he was always very sparky, he did not get along with any other of his male flock mates even with a larger covey.

So I kept him separate for a few weeks, and I noticed he’s losing feathers. I’m assuming it’s because of stress from being alone. He’s not sick he’s eating drinking but very scared and seems upset all the time. So I found a local source for some females about the same age today, and he’s freaking out, doesn’t want to be with them, they’re chasing him. (Whereas, I had another boy I had separated. Who took to them really well, was very humpy humpy and now they’re settled in.)

I’m just not sure if this guy is just antisocial or if he misses his original hatch mates, or if maybe there’s something wrong with him? He’s losing a lot of feathers, I’ve already checked for mites, I’m giving him electrolytes, etc I’m not sure what’s going on. Any thoughts are appreciated. I’ve had coil for several years this is something new…thank you!

He could also just be molting, it's that time of year for mine! See if the others also start shedding feathers soon

My four month old quail are molting right now. Hopefully that's all it is for your boy, too

That's an adult coturnix.
Yes, but he was just born three months ago, why would he molt right away? No one else from his group is. It seems he’s stressed from being separated, but when I gave him some girls today, it didn’t go so well. 😣

Stress is a possibility, but you were asking for other possibilities.

You also didn't answer on what you're feeding him.

He’s on an adult quail feed by wholesome harvest
