they were my first batch of chicks i have ever raised i have always bought adult birds
last sunday i got to watch 4 baby cochins hatch and then i got to take them home ... i was estatic , i always love getting new birds
since sunday i have spoiled them and loved them , they would run to the side of the box every morning before i lef tfor school so i could hold them and cuddle them
last night i put them in a 10 gallon tank overnight because the brooder box needed to be cleaned and i hadnt gotten to it yet ,
i put the light over the tank , and they were fine , so i thought
this morning i woke up and 3 of my babies were dead , 1 was sitting there still alive, i took him out and called my mom.. she thinks they must have over heated in the tank ..
wich makes me feel sick to my stomach just to think about .... i have always taken care of my pigeons, chickens , rabbits, and parrots , nothing like this has hppened to me before with my chickens ,
now i have the lone survivor " Riley" sitting on my chest , he was scared to be alone in the brooder ( not the tank , put that in basement)

I Feel like the worst person ever , my chicks sufferd because i was stupid and didnt think about the tank overheating

Hard lesson to learn that way but you know you'll never repeat that again and it was an honest mistake/accident. Can you go back and get a couple of friends for Riley?

i am picking up afew friends for Riley because i know he can't be alone , thank you for your kind words

I am so sorry about your babies.

I have raised many baby parrots in fish tanks and it is a science to keep a comfortable temperature for them. The main difference is that parrots have to be fed by hand; every two hours when they are small; so you are constantly checking and adjusting the light for temperature. You don't sleep much with baby parrots. I have found that a wire top helps a lot in keeping it from getting too warm. I did have a friend that did the exact same thing as you with a clutch of African Grey babies. It happens

I am very very sorry for you loss.

I try to repeat as much as I can not to use aquariums for brooding chicks. Overheating is the fastest way to kill a bird. Fishtanks are for fish, not birds.

Don't be afraid to try again! I know you feel very bad, but forgive yourself. You won't make that mistake again. And you can tell your story here and help prevent other people from making that mistake.

It's OK. Forgive yourself.
