We have a small flock...8 hens and one rooster. All of our hens are laying and we have been consistently getting 6 or 7 eggs a day since winter ended. Today when I went to check on our Snowball, our broody who has been sitting on eggs in one of our nest boxes for a couple of days, I noticed 3 tiny soft shell eggs laying on top of each other on the floor of the hen house in front of another nest box. They were small, like the size of large grapes. Actually, about the exact size as a yolk. Very small compared to the normal size off our eggs. They looked as though all three were expelled at the same time. We have had a soft shell egg before, but it was normal in size and only once (we determined it was from one of our hens when she was just beginning to lay last year). I've never seen anything like this. Has anyone else? Could it have anything to do with a broody hen in another nest box? All of our chickens are acting normal. They are fed Purina Layena pellets and have oyster shells available also. We try to avoid giving them scratch all the time, but we do give them their favorite fruits and veggies when we have scraps or just as a treat. All in all we feel like they are pretty healthy and happy. One soft shell egg every now and again doesn't concern me necessarily, but 3 identical tiny soft shells piled like that is confusing!
