1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) She is a Belgian Bearded d'Anver, 3 weeks old, feeling thin as not eating much..
2) What is the behavior, exactly. She started off a day ago, limping heavily on one leg, she was obviously distressed and in pain, became reluctant to walk or stand and when I supported her by holding her up, she would draw the one leg up into her chest and stand on just one leg. She wasn't interested in food or drink. I gave her some metacam last night and got some fluid into her and a tiny bit of food. Today she has regained her appetite, is eating and drinking whatever is put in front of her but tires easily. She is getting weaker, and when I lift her she straightens and stiffens her legs - she refuses to bend them. She still can clench her toes, move her legs etc, but she only moves them with her legs unnaturally straight so she can't walk or do much.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? About 2 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No, all the other chicks are perfectly normal.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. I originally assumed she must have slipped a tendon jumping off the electric hen, but everything feels normal.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Chick crumb, water, hardly any yesterday, not much today but regularly taking small amounts.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc Perfectly normal.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Metacam, vitamin powder in food, bending and moving legs in normal movements for her, while holding her up.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? If she is still with us by Friday, but no improvement, I will take to vet to be pts.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. She looks normal except when she stiffens her legs, and she is a bit puffed out, tired and unhappy.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use She is in an indoor brooder, plastic, grippy bottom, grill lid, on Aubiose hemp bedding, with an ecoglow electric hen type brooder instead of a bulb.
