Hi there, thanks in advance for any help.

We have six 3 week old chicks, we've had them for 2 weeks, they've all been together in their heated brooder, with pine shavings, clean water and starter food.

Two days ago, we noticed one chick had what looked like a drop of saliva hanging from her butt. She was just standing around looking a little "off", not active at all. As she stands there, her tail goes up and down methodically, as if she's trying to "go". I gave her some electrolytes in water by dropper, a dose of Poly-Vi-Sol, and quarantined her for the day. There were several diarrhea poops in her box, so it appears she is pooping, and there was no blood, etc.

All five of the other chicks are jumping around like idiots, still not showing any of her symptoms. I'm guessing/hoping it's not contagious at this point. I have continued with the Poly-Vi-Sol and electrolytes by dropper, just to be sure she's somewhat hydrated. I did catch her getting a drink of water this morning, so she must be doing that somewhat, but I haven't spotted her eating. At times, she appears to perk up, but still not right. Other times, the poor thing puts her head down and just stands there clenching her butt, breathing heavy, or whatever she's doing. This morning she looked pathetic. I picked her up to give her the dropper, and her "cheep" sounded more like a baby goose, as if she was hoarse. I haven't noticed any sneezing or signs of a cold.

Any ideas as to what may be causing her to act like this? Thanks!

You might consider treating her with Corid in case she's brewing a nice case of coccidiosis. Sometimes you will see blood in the poop sometimes you won't. I treat for it immediately any time I see a previously normal chick acting slow and doesn't want to eat/drink and has runny poop. And if that's not what this is then you'll have at least ruled it out. It's just so common and such a fast killer that it's always wise to treat for it.

I would tend to agree with the previous poster - I had one last year that was doing exactly that, literally everything you described. I tried everything you tried, and never did see any blood in the poops. The only thing I had not treated her for was Cocci. I did end up losing the poor thing.

I hope it works out for you!
