Hello there,
I have a big barred rock hen who has outgrown my capability to care for her...unfortunately.
She's kind of a picky eater but really likes her veggies, and she does lay eggs, though they're small and her laying is inconsistent (but the yolks are really big). I think that might have to do with how she's been living with me/my family..we're not totally sure we have been raising her properly.

All of a sudden no one really has time to look after her anymore, and though we love having her around, we just don't think she's getting the love and attention she should be getting.

She's not very well socialized, and has never lived with any other animals before, so we're not sure if it's going to be a problem if she were to join a new flock, but we do know she needs a new home.

Here's a few pictures of her:

She has since these photos gotten even bigger (these are from when she was around 2).
As far as we know she is a barred rock, my younger sister brought her home as a chick from elementary school (they were learning about eggs/baby chicks in class, and they had several other types of chickens as well as 2 duck eggs).

We live in Minnesota and would prefer to not have to ship her to someone...so it's best if we could either meet halfway somewhere, one of us drives out to the other...
I'm sure that given some more space and care she will become a bit more sweet than she is right now--when she was little I used to play chase and fetch with her all the time, and even carry her around on my shoulder--she was a very loving little dear, until she got older, and we're not entirely sure why. Molting also cranks up her bad mood...

Thanks for looking, and I hope we can find her a good new home soon!
*Edit* I'd also like to mention: We want her to go to a home that will not turn her into dinner! So please keep that in mind...Thank you.. (I'm really sad to see her go but I think there's a better place for her out there)

You probably cannot do it. You need a special bio box with a filter and she must be shipped Express overnight. Plus, no matter what other are doing, you are supposed to either have a vet's certificate and/or be NPIP certified, which you are not, obviously. I would not attempt to do this on your own. The local animal shelter may be able to help or you can put an ad up at the local farm or feed store or on Craigslist if no one on BYC is in your area.

Oh dear..thanks for that advice, but I'll wait a bit longer. I'm not in a huge hurry to rehome her--I have until September to do so (the person in our family who has the most time to look after her is moving away then), but it'd be nice to find her a new home soon.

Minneapolis/st.paul area, though we are willing to drive out an hour or so to deliver her.

Since this seems to be going nowhere...I'm wondering, as I've never done this before, is it hard to rehome a 3-year old hen?
We really need to find her a new home by the end of this summer...

Hey there, I just came across your post....I live in Princeton and the farm I work for in Monticello has many chickens, I will ask him tomorrow when I am over there if he would be interested in another, will post tomorrow night on what I find out and may just have a number for you to get in contact :)

Oh that would be great! (sorry for the delayed response). Thank you so much!
