I have read that number 20 -about the legality of beating one's wife- is an urbane legend. Its just a very old urbane legend.

What I read was that historians can't find an actual law in any public record that says that a man can beat his wife as long as the stick is as big as his thumb. When people quote this legend notice that they never give a actual ancient document as a source. They are usually just quoting someone else.

I am not saying that it wasn't legal at one point to beat your wife, just that there was probably no law about how big the stick could be.
