4-H Fair is coming soon!

My 4-H fair iscoming soon aug. 14th I think and I would wlike to show one of my birds, I want to enter my black silkie. I think he is 8 weeks old today, is he old enough I will post some pictures later but im on a different computer so I cant get to them right now, What do I need to do to make him 1st place material?, he looks just like alleyoop25's silkie except he has a little bit of a more fluffy tail, he is my lap silkie he loves to be pet and falls right asleep in your lap is very quiet and tame, will not bite you finger enless you have food on it

. I love him dearly

and would love to enter him tell me what do you need to do, and what you do when you enter a bird at a fair do you usually just let the judges look, or do you need to answer all sorts of qestions I dont want to be asked a qestion and just be like i dont no

.

Most 4 h fairs you need to be in a group, they usually prep you on what goes on at shows. Yes they do ask you questions, mostly about care and your breed and maybe how you care for it. My niece was in 4h with turkeys a few years ago.

Yeah, at fairs there is usually open class and 4h. To do 4 h or FFA you need to be a member. You have a much greater chance to win something there and place well because a good portion of the score is your showmanship. If you are not a member... you have to do open class... and that one is tough. I've walked down rows of open class shows where almost all the birds were disqualified. That doesn't happen as much under 4H and FFA because you are students doing stuff to learn, not spending lots of money on meeting the standard of perfection.

I don't actually show for that reason. If I was in 4h I would for the fun of it, but doing open class stuff is competitive and not quite my thing.

You can try though. Each fair is different. County fairs are easier than state fairs too if you choose to try. Usually you want to show a "mature" pullet or cockerel with their adult plumage but most of that stuff is waved if you are in 4H.

Someone with experience can probably say more. This is just from what I've heard and seen.

Edit: Another reason I don't show is because of the risk of diseases and parasites you can pick up from other birds. It's a small risk but still a risk.

It will be too late to enter the fair this year. You need to find your local 4-H group and join them at the beginning of next year.

Your leader will need to file paperwork on what your project is going to be. You will then be given a book that you need to complete. You will probably need to attend a livestock class and then go to the skill-a-thon. You will need to show them that you know all about your project.

Then you will need to file paperwork that says you are actually entering your project in the fair. This paperwork will need to be reviewed and then approved before you can bring your animals to the fair.

No, thats not how it works around here you just need to pay for a booth, and cage and animal that is all i know about, but ya.
