I had 33 chicks in a large pen since June. I started leaving their pen "house"(it's really a pen we made in our garage) door open because of this heat and it is not properly vented. In the last 4 days I gave my brother 14 of the chicks. I now had 19 left. They are not small they are 4 months old all large breeds, but still not full grown. I do love all my chickens but there was one that was special to me the first chicken I ever named and she looked at me differently than the others. I went out today(SUNDAY) and she is missing. I am not new to owning chickens so I know what it should look like if a predator were to get in there. Also I live in-town, like my lot is only 80' wide by 60' long I have houses on every side of our lot. There are a few woody spots but they are not very big but there are woods about 1/2 mile. We definitely have skunks I smelled one last night, in very close proximity. I have not seen anything else but my husband said he saw a coon awhile ago. There are a few other people (one for sure) that have chickens nearby. The outdoor pen my chickens have is enclosed but not predator proof(only really enough from birds of prey when they first went out), I thought I had a little more time. We also do have feral cats in the area. I have been looking for her all day and even after it got dark I thought she might come home. We have a huge raspberry thicket behind our fence and I am hoping she is just hiding in there as today was super hot. What are the chances my little "Bitty" is going to come home?

ok it sounds like to me that if you dont see any signs that there are tracks of ground animals then you have a hawk or kestral problem. we had them come and swoop up our chickens so we put a net over the top of the pen. raccoons and i skunk killed the rest of them before we finished the net. the net is up and we have 34 chickens and nothing is getting in.im not saying anything about you not being good with chickens but if they do try to dig under dig a big hole around the outside and put a 4 inch chicken wire in the hole so when a raccoon or other land predator tries to dig under they will just hit the wire.
