I just noticed this on one of my chicks. I seperated her, cleaned it, applied neosporin. Has anyone ever seen ANYTHING like this? She is acting fine, but the thing seemed to bleed ALOT. She is eating, drinking, and pooping just fine. Its not blocking her vent. It was hiding behind her wing!

I've been looking at all kinds of pictures on the web of chicken injuries, and I'm finding NOTHING that looks anything like this! It looks like some kind of exploded boil or growth, but I've never noticed a growth on any of my chicks, and I watch these things like a Hawk! Just last night I noticed one of the other girls picking at her, then found this. I would really appreciate any help at all!

I really don't know what it is. Just a question though is it infected where I circled, maybe it would smell or something? Cuz what I am thinking maybe she got cut or another hen pecked her and she got an infection. I know chickens can get ringworm, but I haven't a clue what it looks like. Maybe someone else will see your post and can be more help.

Its not infected that yellow stuff is not puss its part of the growth thing. Its hard solid growth or something that exploded or got picked open i just dont know what to do for her! Even if it heals closed as soon as i put her back with the rest they will probably peck at it and re open it. And my husband thinks that it will make it impossible for her to lay an egg cause her vent is not blocked but that thing seems to have grown off the side of it

i want to wait and see what happens but he thinks we should cull her. Any opinions?

definately some kind of growth... I worked with a country vet for 6 years and you see things like that around.. Couldn't say exactly what it was without a biopsy. It will either go 2 ways... heal up or fester up. It isn't ring worm.

If she is happy, eating and you can keep her separated (until it heals somewhat)... give her a shot at life and just keep up the application of neosporin. Neosporin will help stop any infection from external sources.

If you see that it is growing bigger rather than healing up..... that is when I would make the decision to cull her.

Good luck

Well, it seems to be healing, kind of. Its not getting any bigger, doesnt smell, and I clean it, apply peroxide, then neosporin twice a day. Last night was the first time she acted up when I was cleaning it. Any other time, she just kind of closed her eyes and stayed still. She really put up a struggle last night. Poor baby!

My husband, and another person who is local and raises chickens, doesnt think she will be able to lay eggs when she gets old enough to. The local farmer actually told me that she will try to lay an egg, and will not be able to push it out due to the size of the growth

So, I'm thinking about culling her. Any opinions?

It hasnt bled since I pulled her out of the brooder with the rest of the chicks. Its just a hard, yucky, raw looking growth thing. I'm prepared, even though I don't want to, to cull her if its in her best interest. I knew, when we decided to get chickens, that I would have to toughen up, just in case of emergencies. I just would really like some opinions on whether or not this thing could effect her ability to lead a safe, heathly, egg laying life. I don't want to prolong, or cause any suffering for her.
