My 4 week old chick is turning her right leg out, it points 90 degrees from the normal foot position. Checked her and the leg joint is ( like our elbow ) is swollen and does not feel right in comparison to her other leg. She can eat, drink, and get around but can't really put weight on the leg. Any suggestions on how I can immobilize the joint to take pressure off of it or how to possibly straighten it to heal? Any help would be much appreciated...she is a Black Copper whom I would hate to lose.

Hi,
I'm new to the forum. It sounds like splayed legs for your chicks. I read somewhere that if the surface they are on is slippery they can't keep their legs together. This can become permanent and the chicken has to be euthanized. Look up splay leg and see if you can find anything. I remember seeing something about a splint and make sure the floor of the cage is textured--even a towel will work.

Good luck!
