4 week old chick wont stay

I have my 4 week olds in a brooder in my kitchen. My chick keeps flying out and walks all over my kitchen but well you know that when i chicks gotta go, hes gotta go, so i come home to poop everywhere! Is my brooder too small?she has places to persh at different levels and only goes in the brooder to eat and drink. Safety isnt an issue my kitchen is chick proof. I take them out everyday to get exersize outside under supervision but... she wont stay put. Any input? What size should my brooder be? I have a box about 2ft by 18inches tall right now with one 4 week old and 2 two week olds. has any one had a problem with this?

If you put an old window screen over it, that will take care of the problem. That is what I have done.

My brooder has a covered top. I keep them in a shed where I can monitor the enviroment. I had a brooder built when I decided I was goign to love raising chickens. Sad to say my rooster pen is filling up so I need to butcher. Oh well... get a deeper box/put a wire cover on the top/ or trim the wings a bit.

But if your going to raise chicks a lot then build a proper brooder.

Mine are almost 4 weeks now and started to do the same thing...

I ended up putting netting over the top... problem solved...

But boy... when I take off the net I get about 4 of them who fly up immediately to sit on the side and greet me.

It is cute!

I have 4 4 week old bantys who like to go. My hubby had a 4x8 sheet of plywood and made a pen in the garage. We used a wall as one side and made 3 walls with the ply wood. It is 2 feet wide 8 feet long and 4 feet high. We made a door that latches shut so i can get in and out. Works great. Now they can not get out.

Sounds good, i felt bad enclosing them but if i build a bigger brooder i wont felel so bad. Looks like i have another project before the coop is completed. I like my pets to roam free as much as possible...and i admit, i love walking in on my chickie snuggling up to my dog in the dog bed

We started with a top for the brooder, but the chicks would frighten and scatter too much. We were afraid that one or more would get hurt because they were so afraid.

So we put a 4' high chicken wire fence around our brooder pool and none of the chicks flew out of the brooder for the 6 weeks they were in it.
