I posted this on the BYC facebook, and I'm hoping for more answers here. This is my 4 month old RIR, "Red." I've never been convinced that she was a hen, hence the gender neutral name. She is much more tall and slender than the rest of our hens (diverse flock). She has never been very people friendly either. Some of the hens have started laying this past week, and I've seen her go into the coop and sit for awhile on our dummy egg. But she never lays, just squawks a lot. The other girls are doing the submissive squat and have become very friendly. Nothing from Red. Here are the best pics I could get today. So hen or roo?

I'm going to say pullet...with some reservations.

She has odd looking cushion, but it is not really a roo's saddle. Her hackles are a bit shaggier, but not like a roo's.

If she is going into a nest box, sitting, and squawking, which are not normal roo traits, I think she is contemplating coming into lay just not there yet. She won't squat until she is hormonally ready to lay...

So...I say pullet...until she crows...then I'll happily change my mind...but I think hen.
