I'm having a fence built around my garden and also around my chicken coop to create a chicken yard that is 25 ft by 30 ft.

The fence will be 6 ft tall and will be composed of wire squares with wood trim around all sides of wire creating a "boxed in" look.

My question is there are all different sizes of wire squares to choose from. The fence builder wants to use 4x4 inch wire squares as the mesh.

Is a 4x4 inch square too big? Will my chickens be able to get through a 4x4 inch square?

Thank you so much,

Shannon

Unless they're full grown huge chickens they can squeeze through 4x4 plus coons & possums can easily get through too. 4x2 wire is much better for both reasons.

I'd go with hardware cloth (1/2 inch) to prevent predators from getting in.

2x4 will be your best choice for a yard fence. 1/2" hardware cloth would cost a fortune 6' high by 110' long.
