I keep telling myself I'll be patient, but this barred rock chick has a lot of signs that point in both directions for me. For reference, I've got a BR, a RIR and an Olive Egger - they're all supposed to be pullets and will be five weeks tomorrow. I need three hens, so if she's a cockerel, I'm trying to figure it out sooner rather than later so I can hopefully integrate another BR girl into the tiny flock asap.
The BR is definitely the leader and the first to do everything, chases sparrows (and a squirrel) in the backyard and has a pinker comb than everyone else (the RIR developed a little comb at the same time, but it's not as pink). Shes starting to have a little red around the ears and wattle area, but no obvious wattle. She has a wash down her legs, and her legs don't look burly in comparison to the other chicks.
Attaching her chick photos, as well as some taken today and yesterday. Tried to get body overhead, some legs, and her in comparison with the RIR. I would say the camera is washing out a little of the color, but in real life nothing is *red red* - but definitely *pink.* She developed the comb at about 3 weeks, and it hasn't grown in size at all, but has developed more color.
She doesn't love being handled - absolutely the hardest to catch following playtime in the backyard - so have done my best here, but if there are other photos I can capture that would be more useful - happy to try!
Thanks - and I know the real answer is "wait and see" - but if you have a strong feeling now, I'd love to hear it.
