I have a Russian Orloff pullet age 5 weeks that was pecked by her mama hen when she stopped brooding. The injury looks really bad, but she seems to be in good spirits. The best I could do was separate her and clean the wound with pierced ear solution (benzalkonium chloride). I wish I could stitch it closed but it's been too many days. She is eating and drinking well.

This is the back of her neck.
What I'd like to know is if her feathers will grow back right there.

This is her back which is normally covered by her wings.
The skin is dry and scabby and her pin feathers are patchy.
Is this a normal part of molting or does she have a disease?
My OCD daughter did pick out a few that looked funny, but I told her to stop.

Is this life threatening or will she eventually heal? She's getting spoiled hanging out in the house.

Sorry about your chick. Is she eating and drinking? The feathers might grow back in on the neck when the skin comes together, but they could be sparse. Vetericyn, Hibiclens and water, or weak Betadine are good to clean the wound initially. Then keep it moist with Vetericyn or saline, and apply plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice a day to keep the tissue from drying out. Unfortunately the chick will need to be separated and kept away from flies while it heals. Are their other chicks in the same group?

Sorry you are having these problems.... It will def beed to be seperated and treated topically with something antibacterial, if not orally. Also 5 week old havent gone through a molt yet so that is not nornal, def keep her away from all other hens and keep the flies away and try tomuse some betadine like the other person said and or some of that blue spray..Im sure you can find it at your local feed store or TSC...it might be in the horse section. Best of luck!!! And be very vigilant as things can turn very quick.

She has been eating and drinking but not as much yesterday and today.

There are 7 total chicks in her group. I'm not sure how to keep her from being shunned when she returns.

That's not really the biggest problem, so many ways that I am found on this website and from my own experience to combat that but making sure she lives is the more important one... I'm sure you'll find what works for you
