This one has me stumped, I'm hoping it's a boy as I need as melanistic rooster for my hens but I'd like some opinions before I buy another rooster. It's 6-8 weeks old, has really big feet and somewhat of a comb coming in. Has some red flecks on it's feathers in the shoulder area but I can't tell if the incoming feathers are round or pointed though it would be too early to tell that way. I've never owned Mystic Onyx before.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

It looks to be a pullet, so far. I see a few brown feathers mixed in, but no bright red on the shoulders or hackle. It's a bit early for male specific feathering, anyway. Usually it comes in around 12 weeks or so.

I'm basing my opinion mainly on the comb, which seems pretty small to me. Unfortunately, with melanistic breeds you don't get to judge by redness of face and comb, so they are trickier.

I can try again in a few weeks or get pics of incoming feathers and see if someone can tell that way. I was hoping someone with a bit more knowledge on the breed would know. I appreciate the response!

Mystic Onyx is a hybrid, so pretty variable. A lot of them have Silkie type combs. I think you are smart to wait before buying a cockerel, just in case.

I had at one time 10+ but I lost them to a really bad coccidia outbreak, this one is the lone survivor, I'm praying the local feed store gets more in this year. Interestingly enough all of mine had single combs, some were crested and most had the extra toes like a silkie. They very much grow like a meat bird.

They are very cool looking. I hope you can find some more.
