Hey guys. So this is my first time raising chicks. My BCM l, who is 6 days old today had a bit of pastey butt going on. I've been very gently running her rear end under the luke-warm tap and it seemed to be getting better. Tonight at butt-check I noticed that her vent looks like it's coming out up top. Is this prolapse?? If so, what do I do about it. I dabbed just a smidge of petroleum jelly on it tonight with a q-tip. She seems to be in pain. What can I do to help her?

It does look swollen around the vent, maybe not a complete prolapse. It still is probably from constipation due to shipping stress, dehydration, or too hot of temps. Do you have her under a brooder lamp? Use a thermometer if so, and keep it at 90 degrees the first week, 85 the second, but always have a cooler spot in the brooder to go to if she is hot. Try dipping her beak as often as possible into water to get her hydrated. A few drops of molasses sometimes helps as a laxative. Vegetable or olive oil applied just inside the vent may help, and keep all droppings cleaned away.

Hi @Eggcessive
As far as the brooder heat, I'm using a heating plate like brinsea eco glow and it's set lower on one end and higher on the other so each chick can find their desired temp.
I've been keeping her clean (despite her protests) and clean fresh water costantly. She's a good drinker and her stools have been a little watery. Not diarrhea exactly, but just a bit watery.

What do I do for her swollen protruding bottom? Witch hazel? PrepH?
