Hello, I am hoping you guys can help me figurenthis out. I am pretty new to raising chickens, and this has me confused.
Our flock consists of 6 Red Stars (I believe) who are about 20-22 wks old and 4 others that are about 10 wks younger than them, one being a rooster.
About 3 wks ago I found our first egg, in the nesting box no less!! I was so excited, and we could even tell which one it was because she kept hanging around the coop and was pretty noisy. Within the same week a few days later, I found 2 eggs in various places around our bushes where they love to hang out! I was pretty surprised, but super happy about getting 3 eggs/day! I knew they were not from the same hen as her egg is a different color brown, nice deep golden brown color, these were a light brown one with lots of spots, the other with none.
So I had the children comb the bushes daily for eggs and we have not found any more since that day.
Two mornings in the last 2 wks we have found a soft shelled egg in the coop, already broken into and scattered by the time we get there (around 730 am).
Any insight as to why I am not getting more eggs each day? They are free range to quite a large area, however they have favorite spots which we know about. Why only a soft shelled egg twice, in the coop and no more?
Also, sometimes I notice one bird is much more noisy than the others for the day. Is this significant? We are trying to track if it's the same bird or different but it's quite tricky as they are all the same color, lol
Thanks, I am pretty perplexed.

Do they have enough calcium?
Any change in behavior (sickness)?
Do you think they ate the soft shelled eggs?

Its possible that something outside gets to the eggs out there first.
If you do have a chicken turned egg eater who gets them outside then something else can clean up the evidence before anyone notices.

I wish I could help more but I say try to watch them or maybe keep them in the coop for one day. See what you are left with in a controlled enviroment.
Good luck!

It usually takes new layers about a month to settle into laying. it's like there is a learning curve. Soft shelled eggs, tiny eggs, eggs dropped from the roost as if the pullet didn't know it was coming, eggs laid out in the open and accidentally broken -- all sorts of things happen. Some of yours may not have started yet. If a couple have lighter combs, they probably haven't laid yet. Another sign is the "squat." Noisiness has always varied among mine quite a bit. Also, some get noisy before they lay, some while another is laying, some after they lay, etc.

I think I'd check behind the kids, too....

I don't think they ate much of the egg, the white was gone, but the yolk was in a clump. The shell was broken and in a few different places in the coop. So, maybe they DID eat the egg?
We have plenty of squirrels around, do they eat the eggs, I didn't think they would?
We are out in the country so I assume there could be something to get to the eggs but our woods are quite a ways back from the house.
They haven't been acting any different as far as illnesses are concerned. It has been quite hot here though. Some of them are louder than usual, esp in the morning and evening. Also, one of the square low to the ground when we try toehold/pick her up, or if we get close to her.
Calcium, I have put oyster shell in their food but they don't like it, well, they dnt eat it.
I did try to keep them innthe coop one morning, but it's beennvery hot so I didn't want to keep it closed up. I out some chicken wire across the opening but it wasn't secured and they all flew out.

Yup, I'm a newbie, lol.
