Got a call from my Uncle yesterday asking me if i wanted 6 RIR hens that are about 6 weeks old. Told him yes, free is free. I have 6 chicks coming from Meyer's the first of May. I decided I didn't need 12 egg layers so I am going to butcher the 6 free when they are ready. I know not to mix them together but how big do i let the six free ones get . Never have butchered anything so this should be fun. Just wanted to know how big to let them get.

Short answer, they will be big enough to eat but still tender for frying or grilling at 12-16 weeks, although of course they won't be full size. Long answer:
