Hey y'all,

So I am new to (posting on) this forum, so hello! I am also new to owning backyard chickens, but I work in animal husbandry (exotics, to be specific).
I currently own 4 six-week-old Rhode Island Red pullets - or so I was told. I have been thinking for a while now that one may be a roo. She has been feathering much slower than her sisters and has a very upright posture. However, something that makes me hold onto the idea that she might be a female is that her comb is so small and is still very much yellow, and her demeanor is pretty friendly and laid back.

Here's a picture of the chick in question - S/he is the one on the right.

Thoughts?

Thank you!
Brianna

There is nothing that indicates anything but pullet. As you say, there is no red comb or wattles appearing. She just appears to be much slower feathering, that's all.

I also do not see anything by way of white feathering suggesting a red sexlink. I'm assuming the light areas in the photo are merely bright sunlight and lack of red feathers.

Thank you!! That's very encouraging. I will keep you updated! :)

UPDATE!
Here are some updated pics of my RIR pullets - they're currently 8 weeks old and looking more like big chickens! My original suspected roo is still looking different from the other girls, but other than being really behind on feather development and being a complete meanie, she seems to not be showing a lot of signs of being a roo.

Here are two pictures of her:

And a pic of two of the other girls for comparison:

What do y'all think? Still a pullet? :)

Brianna
