In the Brooder
Ok first off thanks to the many people who answer questions and try to help others.
I ordered my ducks (3 Golden Layers and 2 Cayuga) from eFowl because I live in Minnesota and there website talks abou there farm is in Minnesota. I ordered from them for two reasons, firstly I didn't want to stress the birds any more than I had to thinking they would come from Minnesota and second it was when the news about the latest Avian influenza started to come out thinking if there local birds it would keep from exposing new birds or if they were exposed give some resistance to it.
The birds arrived on June 8 healthy from Gonzalez CA (Metzer) ironically were I was originally going to order them from but wanted to buy local. They were all healthy the short list of lessons learned.
1 Be prepared to make changes kinda fast because even if you don't think it's possible ducks will find a way to poop there.
2 While the benefits of fermented feed are awesome your spouse will get mad at you in 3 days time if you do it in your kitchen.
3 It's easy to get side tracked but clean the bathtub after giving the ducks a swim.
4 They grow incredibly fast at six weeks they won't fit into the brooder like they used to so get the coop finished sooner rather than later.
5 Even if you do all you can sometimes they don't make it. Learn from it and move on and don't beat yourself up . I lost one of the Layers last night the only thing we can figure out was she ate some thing she shouldn't.
6 Ducks are literally poop factories.
