7 TSC Pullets...might be a bunch of Roos.

A good rule of thumb when you buy chicks from a feed store, you never know what you are getting but it is a good guarantee that you will get mostly roos. The mail and phone orders are usually the pullet orders and what they dont sell, they pass it down to the feed stores.

A few friends of mine bought alot of chicks, and there were a few pullets and tons of cockerals. It was very dissapointing time for them to try to get rid of the extra roos.

The one I was at had a bin lableled 'red sex links' well, they were males and females, it was obvious which was which of course. I was thinking yours look like male sex links, so probably same kind of mix up.

The hatchery sells what is ordered and they have available. They don't pick and choose what to sell to feed stores versus private customers.

Some feed stores will order only, or mostly pullets; others order straight run. Many do a bit of both. They order what they believe will sell.

If you don't like their choices, politely make your point. "Gee, I wish you had ordered pullets--I would have bought xx of them." Or "gee--I was hoping you had barred rocks--I don't care for the Rhode Island Reds." Or "next time you order can you get some australorp pullets--I really like them! And would buy xx, but I don't need an entire box."

As to why it would be the hatchery vs TSC at fault for having cockerels, TSC is at fault if they labeled their bin "red sex-link pullets" or even just "pullets." The hatchery is at fault if pullets were ordered and they sent straigt run. But you should be dealing with the feed store and they should deal with the hatchery, and hte buck should stop wherever the ultimate fault occurred. I know that some hatcheries guarantee their sexing.
