We're new to chickens, lovin' our flock and keepin em happy all the way down here in Hereford, AZ.
We decided to start earlier this year (mid march) with 10 of the cutest little fluffy butts anyone has EVER seen! It was a serious toss up between buff orpingtons or silver laced wyandottes. The wyandottes won for a few reasons, dual-purpose, not too broody and fairly heat tolerant. Yes, orpingtons are all of those BUT wyandottes are American Heritage hailing out of NY, those were the tie breakers. It's been a blast from the start in the bath-tub brooder we set up to their outdoor taj-mahal my handsome mountain man built them.
I was completely stoked to have 10 hens! Had numbers crunched, their permanent coop all planned out (in my head lol), their nesting boxes were set to be a certain way lalala you know
. Only 3 are named, so far we have Xena, Chicken Little and David. Yupper you read that right, David. One little fluffy butt was this peckin lil terd, constantly stirrin up all the others, pushing them off food or water so John (handsome mountain man) names it David (there's history to the name). Having the name David (first or middle) automatically authorizes the bearer to be ornery in our family). As the lil cuties are growin up one of their combs/wattles becomes more prominent to the others. So prominent....anyone? ROOSTER....grrrrrrrrrrrr. Well, he's still alive, VERY handsome and does a good job at keeping the ladies.
This is just a tid bit of our homesteading journey. We have 3 senior horses, who've been-there-done-that and now enjoy a happy farm life. Moving on to the furry 4 paw fuzzy butts we have 1 senior aussie-shep Chunk, Bella a queen-like 6yr old catahoula, Lounge 'Lizzie' Lizzard 6yr old queensland heeler and Sonny the 2yr old attention hog aussie shep/border collie.
BYC has been a HUGE influence and even GREATER help at providing information that we needed in order to raise 10 healthy chickens!! I came across BYC about a year ago when the education and search began.
**I have pics, LOTS of pics. I'll post em as soon as I get them off my phone <3
