I am new to this, so bear with me... is 8 weeks old enough to hazard some guesses on gender?

Also I have read a few of the posts in here where people predict the gender, but what type of cues are they based off of? Is there somewhere where I can read about which traits are typically male and which are female?

So here's my little buddy... hope it's a girl ::crosses fingers::

I'll try to get better pics of it's head later if that would help, the camera batteries died

her feathers on her head come down really close to the top of her beak, if it were to grow a comb would there be an unfeathered space there? or any sort of bumps or anything at this age?

i have a silver laced polish that looks just like yours but i too have absolutely no polish experience so i dont know

Aw so cute! Hopefully someone can help us all out. I've heard the males get pointed head feathers and the females are more round? Does that work at this age?

I wish I knew what clues to look for =/ Someone should make a sexing website or something! lol

Polish take much longer to sex than most other breeds. Crest sexing usually turns out bad because of false readings so I wouldn't suggest it unless you have alot of experience. It's way to early to tell yet. But you have it right, generally (NOT always) roos develop wild dread-locks and hens, poofy afros.

Wow, that's 8 weeks old?! My 5 week old Polish chicks have all of their feathers already and have crests that are 4X the size of that Polish's! Like I said, you'll have to wait a while. I'd usually say that at 3 months old you should start taking guesses but maybe a bit longer for your slowly-maturing chickie!

I have pictures of crested adults but I'd think you'd be more interested in younger top-hats. Here's a site that I find helpful. Look around, especially in the 'gallery', and you'll see great pics.

Edited To Add: Polish hens don't start developing combs (even though they aren't visible) and wattles until they are around laying time, and the breed is notorious for for being late layers. They typically begin to lay eggs at 8 months to a year old! Looking for wattles in the months to come is your best bet. You also won't have luck with any certain disposition. Males tend to be more people-aggressive but I love my adult hen. She's the sweetest thing.

Phoenix---girl

Justino--girl

Mommy--one of each

That's just my guess

They each look similar to what my polish chickies did when I played the "Hen or Roo" game for 2 months

I vote the golden on the left is your roo- the poofier hat looks more girly.

phoenix- I, too, think yours has a very small hat. Is it a bantam? Perhaps they develop a crest more slowly?
