Just last evening, late, put my 8 week old pullets (all different breeds) out in their brand new coop. It is 8x8 with a high ceiling, so plenty of room. I put down newspaper over the vinyl, linoleum-like flooring, then a whole bag of large-flake wood shaving bedding. They are all out there now happily scratching around and EATING THE NEWSPAPER. What do I do??!! Looks like they might be having a go at the wood shavings, as well

Is this normal, will it hurt them??? Do I remove it straight away? If so, do I need something over the flooring, wouldn't it be too slippery for them?

HELP!!!

Now, I'm not positive, but I think you could probably not use the newspaper. Just the shavings. I had my 8wk olds in a big plastic storage container and just the shavings and they did fine. They pecked at the shavings for a day or two. They may have even eating a few here and there, but they are now about 12 wks. old and all seem healthy!
