8x8 = 64 sq feet
The "rule of thumb" is 4 sq ft per standard sized chicken, but there are good reasons to allow for more than that, so I wouldn't recommend cramming 16 in that coop.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on dheltzel and the 4 sq. ft. and that doesn't include the space taken up by the nesting boxes. Also if you are not free ranging and have an attached run to the coop, you need at least 10 sq. ft. per bird in the run. These numbers are bare minimums. More space is better as overcrowding can quickly lead to aggression, fights, biting and feather plucking, and even cannibalism. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Using the four square feet per bird rule, you could keep 16 birds in your coop. However, more space is better, and, like previous posters mentioned, internal structures like nest boxes will reduce that space.

Also don't include the roosting space in the amount of room for each chicken

It also depends on the size and the character of the breed. Smaller bantams need less space compared to big roosters. Active types and hybrids (often more agressive when hold in small area) need more space then calm types like cochin.

Another item that influences the amounnt of space:, do they have to stay inside (e.g. in summer) after it's getting light or do you have an automatic opener that makes it possible for the chickens to get out to the run/garden at dawn?
