Due to some predator issues my flock of 5 became a flock of 2. I went searching for new feathered friends to join my girls who were 10 weeks at the time. I found a barred rock chick at the feed store who I was told was 8 weeks old. I brought her home and compared her size to my two older girls. My older girls were over double her size! I put her in a separate run from the big girls for a quarantine period while I found her another friend especially since it was not going to be a fair fight/introduction with the older 2 birds. From a private seller I found a production red and ameraucana who were 8 weeks.

So now in the little girl run there is the barred rock at supposed 9 weeks and the production red and ameraucana at 9 weeks. The barred rocks is a lot smaller and barely weighs anything in comparison to the others.

With all that said... The barred rock chick was happy as can be when I first brought her home, chirping, scratching, pecking, and just plain joyful. About 4 days later she started acting lethargic. She was still awake, alert, eating and drinking but just wasn't herself. The next day the feathers under her vent were mucked up with dark cream poo and her feathers were all puffed up.

I isolated her for a few days with her own heat lamp and a little sugar water. That seemed to really help her so she went back with the other chicks. Shes still eating, drinking, and interacting with the other birds but still seems a bit down and hasn't gained any weight.

Any ideas how to help her?

Bringing new chicks onto your property can introduce them to new strains of coccidia that they haven't built up immunity to, and they can get sick. Do you have any Corid powder or liquid? The dosage is 1/2 teaspoonful of powder or 2 teaspoonsful of liquid to 1 gallon of water. Change the water daily and treat for 5 days if you think she has it. Treat them all because it is contagious.
